Growth Stages of Birds

Usually 7 days old

HATCHLING

A bird just out of the egg. Generally a bird is
called a hatchling while it relies on its remaining
yolk supply or untill it is capable of regulting
its own body temperature.

Usually 8-12 days old

NESTLING

Its eyes are open, and its wing feathers look like        tubes bacause they've yet to break through their         protective sheaths. It's also not ready to leave the nest.

Usually 13-20 days old

CHICK

The growing embryo absorbs all the nutrients
from the egg. The embryo develops during this
time and hatches tiny chicks are still wet but
grow fully covered feathers.

Usually 21-30 days old

FLEDGLING

A fledgling is a bird in its first coat of feathers that is          capable of moving about on its own.Its feet can grip a            branch and it has developed feathers.
At this stage, a bird will venture out of the nest and start to learn how to survive without its parents.

IMMATURE

Any bird that isn’t an adult yet, including those
with juvenile or subadult plumages, can be
called immature. The term is commonly used
to reference large birds like bald eagles and
some gulls.

Health

Provide clean, fresh uncontaminated drinking water and change frequently. Some birds can be trained to use a water bottle, which prevents faecal contamination so often seen in open bowls. Provide stimulating environmental enrichment by offering toys, social interaction, and foraging opportunities.

Nutrition

All birds have a protein need. This may be met by feeding limited amounts cooked eggs, cooked egg substitute, bean mixtures (legumes), tofu, whole grain breads, low or non-fat cheese and peanut butter ( in very small amounts). Most birds love dark, leafy greens, zucchini & vegetables.Avoid avocado, onion & garlic.

Behaviour

They're always moving, flying, hopping, swimming, singing, or interacting. They're often climbing, probing, picking, eating, displaying, or doing something that draws our attention. Sometimes a bird's behavior is easily understood. A heron catching a fish, or a parrot eating fruit is obviously about getting food.

Life

Birds live worldwide and range in size from the 5.5 cm (2.2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) common ostrich. There are about ten thousand living species, more than half of which are passerine, or "perching" birds. They play a vital role in controlling pets, acting as pollinators, and maintaining island ecology.

Birds Of The North: Arctict Birds & Seabirds

Cormorant

Some partnerships between humans and birds almost defy belief. There was a time when ancient fisherman would tie a loop around a cormorant’s throat, allowing it only room enough to eat smaller fish, while larger fish remained trapped in its bill – ripe for the taking. Fortunately, this is not the fate of the cormorants we see in the Arctic.

King eider

Not only are king eiders the largest sea ducks in the Northern Hemisphere, they also have a particularly expansive range. This might explain their Latin name, Spectabilis, meaning “remarkable display,” but actually it refers to the vibrant plumage of the males. Regardless of their regal status, these birds of the Arctic are true ducks of the people: King eiders don’t shirk from breeding with common eiders, and are known to form flocks up to 100,000 strong.

Sanderling

These small Arctic wading birds are similar to sandpipers and dunlins in appearance, and are in fact a type of stint, or small sandpiper. Sanderlings are known for the bicycling motion their legs make as they run along the beach in search of food, which is usually invertebrates like small crabs. These circumpolar birds are also very migratory, flying up to 10,000 km (6,200 miles) between Arctic breeding grounds and southerly wintering sites.

Desert Birds

Ospreys

Ospreys are large, migratory birds that are unique among raptors for their ability to dive underwater. They tend to breed in northern regions within Canada, migrating through the deserts of the southwestern United States on their way to winter homes close to the equator.

Roadrunners

Roadrunners have a distinctive shape that helps you identify them. They tend to have very long legs, elongated bodies, very long tails, and long necks. Their bill has a downward curve and they also have a crest of feathers atop their head like a mohawk. Most will have brown or tan plumage with black streaks, a black head crest, and blue skin behind the eyes.

Sanderling

Cactus wrens are the largest wrens in the United States. They have rounded, chunky bodies, thick bills, a long tail, and rounded wings. Most cactus wrens have a speckled plumage of white and brown, with white marks above their eyes that look like eyebrows.

Make a More significant impact and save birds by adding native plants and watch birds come in. Native plants add interest and beauty to your yard and neighborhood and provide shelter and nestling areas for birds.
The necter, sheeds and berries, and insects will sustain birds and diverse wildlife.
